Merchandise Review; In praise of MGM-Studios’ Tatooine Traders

I am a fanboy, a Star Wars (among other things) fanboy. I love Star Tours despite its outdated technology. Its still so much fun to ride. Its also one of the attractions to first start a disturbing trend in Disney theme park design. You must exit the attraction through a gift shop. In this case though, its the very cool Tatooine Traders.

Tatooine Traders is built like a building in the famed Mos Eisley. Inside the building, you will find the usual assortment of Star Wars paraphanelia including action figures, models, and toys. You can also find high end items like authentic lightsabers and collectibles which can cost hundreds of dollars. Plus, you can find t-shirts, backpacks, and other apparel virtually impossible to find elsewhere as well as clothing designed specifically for sale at the parks. These include Star Wars weekend items.

In praise of a store

Most importantly, there are other items created specifically for at the “World” that I would like to point out now. There is a set of action figures which pair Yoda with Jedi Mickey both weilding lightsabers. You can also purchase little bags containing small star wars figures including many of your favorites like R2D2, Darth Vader, Jabba, and Darth Maul. Your child (or child at heart, or collector) may also get a tiny Jedi Mickey, Princess Minnie, or a replica of the Star Tours ride vechile. These can be fun for kids to open, not unlike the excitement of opening up a pack of baseball cards to see who you got. Some of the CMs can actually feel the package and determine whose inside before opening it up. Thus, you can ensure you get Boba Fett not Jar Jar Binks.

My favorite aspect of the store is the photos. Your photo is taken and your face is placed on a famous scene from the Star Wars movies. Personally, my son’s face cropped onto Anakin Skywalker with a drawn saber. We all love it. For any Star Wars fan, it is impossible not to buy something.

I love walking through the store to see some of the great merchandise. I remember seeing Darth Tater in there and buying it on the spot because it was just too funny.
