How many more Pirates of the Caribbean film can they make?

Al Lutz from MiceAge.com is reporting that Pirates of the Caribbean 3; At World’s End may not be the final film in the franchise.  That’s nothing new.  We’ve heard that before.  But what Mr. Lutz suggests is that Disney may now be planning an additional trilogy beyond this one.

The plans for the rumored Phase Two of this island project have been firming up as the Studio gets closer to committing to an additional trilogy of Pirates movies in the years ahead. (Yes, you read right. Not one more sequel, now they are looking to do a trilogy.)

Interesting idea, don’t you think?  I do find it hard to believe that all the same actors will commit to such a long project, but I think the brilliance in this franchise is that they don’t have to.  Even if Captain Jack Sparrow does not return to the screen for the second trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean is a great subject that can spawn other equally as fascinating characters.

Pirates of the Carribean

So, do you believe this will happen?  I admit, it does seem outlandish, but lets couple this information with what Jim Hill reported yesterday.  He presents some serious spoilers for the upcoming film, so be warned.  In that article, he quotes an unnamed source as saying…

Disney’s pulled out the stops on this one. They’ve gone completely over-the-top with ‘At World’s End.’ People are going to freak when they see this film. There’s epic sea battles, killer special effects …

If this is indeed the case, and the final installment of this trilogy is even more successful than Dead Man’s Chest, it would seem very difficult for the people involved to walk away from a franchise that can make oodles of cash for years to come.  In terms of popularity and fan dedication, is Pirates of the Caribbean going to be the Star Wars of this generation?

They still have the potential to make prequels, but it’s all about making money and if Pirates 3 rakes in gobs of money, I wouldn’t fault Disney for trying to milk another 3 films out of it. Look no further than George Lucas if you want to see the poster child of taking one movie and spawning an empire out of it.

Or even something like James Bod, who inspired decades of films. Yes PoTC is great, but they can expand this theme to pirates that are not in these films or at all related.

Pirates of the Caribbean IS Jack Sparrow. Any POTC film without him won’t be POTC.
