Big Thunder Mountain goes down for refurb

Do you ever get a bit frustrated when you hear one of your favorite attractions will be “closed for refurbishment” while you are at Walt Disney World?  There’s nothing you can do about it, but does that really help relieve any of the disappointment?  Yes it has to be done, and it will be better when it is, and yada yada yada!!  It just stinks.  There’s no two ways about it!

My favorite runaway train

I will be in Walt Disney World very soon, and I just received word that Big Thunder Mountain will be closed for the next two-plus weeks for some minor work.  That means I am shut out of my favorite ride at the Magic Kingdom.  I’ll be honest, I’m not too happy about it.  I mean, couldn’t they shut down something I never ride for that week, like Snow White or Stitch?

There is no better solution, I guess.  Things need to be fixed and late-October is probably as good a time as any to close an e-ticket.  But I can’t help thinking of those people who don’t get to go multiple times a year like I do.  For those who have not been able to ride their favorite runaway train for years may never get to ride it again.

Okay, that’s enough whining for today…

That really is too bad. Big Thunder Mountain’s high on my list too.

Do you have any idea when it’s due to reopen?
    (beyond the “two-plus weeks”)

I’m planning to go in early December, and I’ve never been to WDW — I can’t miss BTM!

I think it should re-open on the 24th of this month. You should be fine

Reopening just in time for my trip down!

It certainly does suck when an attraction you enjoy is going to be closed when you’re down for a trip. I don’t mind so much since I go a couple of times per year but I’d hate to be that family that goes once a year or less and has their heart sets on riding only to find it closed. Most folks never go on a website to see its closed and arrive on the park to discover its closure after weeks and months of anticipation. So I guess you got let down easily Dave.

Tell me about it. My wife and I live in Texas, and only get out to WDW about once every two years. Two of the last three times we’ve visted, Splash Mountain has been down for refurbishment. Oof.

Very true. I know that each time we walked by the Haunted Mansion in June there were guests looking at the closure notice and looking befuddled.

That’s one of the tradeoffs with going during slower times, more closures. Though this year was an exception, with both the Haunted Mansion and Spaceship Earth closed for the bulk of the summer.
