Toy Story Mania’s DVC and Passholder previews may be coming soon

I do apologize for the lack of anything…real for the past few days.  I was away for a few days and then we needed to allow Mike to show off his peculiar sense of humor for April Fool’s Day.  But there was certainly not a lack of rumors and news while we were gone, so let’s get right into it.

For those of you who are Annual Passholders or Disney Vacation Club members, there is some good news that has yet to be confirmed.  According to DVCNews.com, we may be close to an announcement regarding special previews of Toy Story Mania, a new attraction coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

According to a source, Disney will soon announce Toy Story Mania preview dates for Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club members.  The current dates being targeted are May 10th, 11th and 12th.

Let me just say that this would be terrifically good news if it pans out this way.  I plan on being at Walt Disney World during this time, and you can be certain that I will have my camera and pen in hand to give you the most in-depth, spoiler filled report possible.

It certainly seems as though the hype for this attraction is no where near the fever pitch of past projects, such as Expedition Everest or even the Pirates remake.  Can we conclude from this that Disney doesn’t think this will be as big a hit as those?

“Can we conclude from this that Disney doesn’t think this will be as big a hit as those?”

With E:E, I think yes. E:E was meant to be a true E-ticket. Big footprint, big ride, big excitement, etc.

With the Pirates changes, I think they were just hyping big because they knew they had a short window for the changes to really drive any traffic. If they waited until now, for example, they really wouldn’t get that much interest, as evidenced by the return of the lines for Pirates to something close to pre-remake levels.

I think there’s two things going on here. One, this really is an attempt at Buzz 2.0, and no matter what Disney says, that’s how most people are going to view it going in. Maybe they’ve created something even better, but I doubt they’d be able to get people to buy into that until after it opens. People are a bit wary of Disney’s hype these days. Honestly, we’ve been burned at least as many times as we’ve had expectations met, so many are hesitant to get too worked up.

Second, I do not think Disney is truly confident this will “Wow” people, so they are hesitant to go overboard on the hype because if will make things all the worse if they fail to meet those elevated expectations.

Remember, that’s an unofficial line we are often fed by Disney, that we simply expect too much and if we just kept our expectations in check, things like DCA could have a chance to succeed.

That’s ridiculous of course, but maybe Disney has learned something from that kind of thinking and don’t want to have a repeat of that here.

I hope it wows. I like the generally idea. I’m not going in think this will replace Tower of Terror as the rope drop special at the park. But I am hopeful it will be a nice addition to a sorely hurting for something fresh place.
