Changing my mind on Trail’s End

It wasn’t long ago that I raved about the value for your dollar that can found while dining at Trail’s End.  The buffet at the Fort Wilderness Campground received more praise from me than just about any other dining destination at Walt Disney World.  But things have changed a bit, and my view isn’t quite what it once was.

Trail’s End at the Fort Wilderness Campground

For one thing, the first two times I was there I went from the Magic Kingdom, via boat launch, to the campground and back again.  It was quick, fun, and went off without a hitch.  This is quite honestly the one and only way I would ever recommend going to Trail’s End.  The problem here, however, is that the park hours are not always conducive to this plan.  When the Magic Kingdom closes early, during certain off season months, you need to take Trail’s End off your itinerary or spend the rest of your night traveling.  Because getting there any other way besides the boat from the Magic Kingdom is a total nightmare of bus after bus that could often take well over an hour.  And I would never suggest doing that to anyone.

Also, apparently Disney bean counters have decided to take some important choices off the menu.  Now, the buffet can only be described as limited and small.  Granted it was never a giant buffet, like the one found at Boma in the Animal Kingdom lodge.  It was never filled with so many things you couldn’t possibly try them all.  But that just makes this choice even all the more confusing.  Why further limit already limited choices?

So it is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I must downgrade my enthusiasm for Trail’s End at the Fort Wilderness Campground.  What was once a place I would send anyone to and be total confident of success is now a place I would suggest only hesitantly and then only if all the stars aligned properly within the Disney World timetable.
